Dental implants have many advantages, but getting one for each tooth in an empty smile involves complicated surgeries that can damage your jawbone. Brian Arnett, DMD, and his team at The Implant & Denture Experts in Scottsdale, Arizona, use All-on-4®, an implant system to permanently replace all your teeth using only four implants in your jawbone. All-on-4 Q & A

What is All-on-4?

All-on-4 is a dental implant system that allows you to replace a whole set of teeth using just four implants attached to a milled titanium bar that matches the shape of your jaw.

The All-on-4 system allows you to avoid the many surgeries that come with replacing many of your teeth and minimize your chances of an infection or surgical complication.

Dental implants are devices Dr. Arnett screws into your jawbone, and they act as artificial tooth roots. All-on-4 is a more permanent alternative to traditional, removable dentures.

What are the advantages of All-on-4?

All-on-4 is advantageous over other smile restoration options like traditional dentures because they:

  • Aren’t removable
  • Look natural
  • Are sturdy
  • Are easy to take care of
  • Are customizable
  • Are made quickly
  • Fuse to your jawbone
  • Minimize your chances of bone loss

Dr. Arnett can give you a full idea of the benefits you’ll enjoy with All-on-4 implants.

How are my false teeth made for All-on-4?

If you choose All-on-4 implants, the false teeth attached to them are made using AvaDent®. Dr. Arnett takes a three-dimensional digital image of your mouth to get an idea of your jaw’s alignment and how your new teeth should fit into it.

Then, he uses the digital image to make adjustments as needed and prints your new, customized teeth.

Once the teeth are printed, they’re attached to the four implants with posts. If your device is broken or doesn’t fit into your mouth comfortably, Dr. Arnett can easily make adjustments with the AvaDent computer image.

What issues might I experience after the All-on-4 implant surgery?

All-on-4 surgery minimizes many of the risks that come with traditional implant surgery, which uses one implant for each missing tooth. After your surgery, you may experience:

  • Bleeding
  • Swelling in your jaw
  • Nausea
  • Pain
  • Bruising and discoloration on your face
  • Sore throat
  • Stiffness

You’ll need to eat a restricted diet of liquids and pureed foods in the days following your surgery. To manage the pain, Dr. Arnett prescribes you with some medication. For the easiest recovery possible, you must follow all of Dr. Arnett’s instructions for aftercare closely.
